Walking one evening with her nephew Paul, her entire life course changes in a single moment and act of courage, as she watches a man risk his life to save others he doesn't even know in a fire.

Through her beloved Uncle, friend and confidant, she meets said man and they fall in love. He and she have the same view points on many things, although he has great difficulty staying faithful.

Hennie gets pregnant forcing them to get married, but Hennie later learns of Dan's affairs and finds she can no longer stay. She feels she can burden no one so she never speaks of why her and Dan separate to anyone.

Also, this is the beginning of Paul Werner and Anna. Unable to deny their passion for one another, and love, they yearn for one another but the times and what is expected keeps them apart.

Paul marries Mimi, his childhood sweetheart because it is the next logical step. Anna hears of the engagement while serving dinner to Paul's family, and quits working for them, her heart in her hands.

They however never stop longing for the other although they both marry others. Some things you just can't deny.

Le premesse per un romanzo interessante ci sono tutte: Apr 10, Deborah Pickstone rated it liked it Shelves: I read Evergreen long ago and was never aware BP ran to a series of 5 with it.

It's a family saga and, as BP always is, a little too cute - the characters are a bit too good to be true. Nothing wrong with an ideal world, however!

Also keeping in mind that there were trends in writing in the late 70s and the 80s that date novels of that period - much less demanding of getting facts straight, for one thing and it was the era of the feisty heroine par excellence.

Almost always with red hair. Clairo I read Evergreen long ago and was never aware BP ran to a series of 5 with it.

Clairol must have done a roaring trade! So I guess I'll read the rest - they are very undemanding reading but I seem to be going through a phase of that, hopefully because I have been busy using my brain for other things!

The second book in the Werner family series Evergreen being the first. This one focuses on Paul's aunt Hennie Roth and the extended family from the late 's through World War I and the years just after.

Paul's mother Florence is Hennie's sister. There are a couple of incidents from the previous book which are also included here but mostly it is other family members.

I didn't enjoy this as much as Evergreen, but still enough to give it three stars. Evergreen covered a much broader range of The second book in the Werner family series Evergreen being the first.

Evergreen covered a much broader range of years than this one. I didn't get as much of a sense of the period in this one.

Perhaps that is why I didn't like it as much. I enjoy books where I can get sucked into the time period and feel I'm living it right there as I read.

For me with this, I had more a role of standing back and observing. Di questo romanzo, grazie a Dio, non mi ricordo assolutamente niente. May 29, Pamela rated it liked it Recommends it for: Every now and then I just have to read a Belva Plain book.

They are wonderful--if sometimes a little predictable. I always feel like I know the characters in a book personally and often hate when a book ends for that reason and her characters are so interesting and well-drawn.

This storyline was a little slow in spots but I was never tempted to put it down--just enough going on--good and bad--to keep the pages turning.

This book had stories of different couples but it all centred around the main character which is Hennie for she is linked to all of them. The author got to her point which I like quite quickly.

She explains of the depression in America and she made Hennie a very strong character but would do anything for her philanderer of a husband. Even break family ties for him which I dislike yet Hennie survived.

Oct 20, Adelaide Arthur added it. Not a fast page turner but I still wanted to know what happened to the characters especially Hennie and Dan.
